2013 Flash Games
This year I decided to better integrate Photoshop with Flash in my Digital Arts class. We did some Video integration with Flash animations as well, but when we brought more Actionscript 3 into the picture we were able to make a 2D scroller style game. The digital arts students aren't particularly interested in coding as much as graphics, so fortunately one of my senior students, Norman Valdez, took on the project of learning Actionscript. Thanks to the tutorials from Antony Cain of "Point, Click, Win", Norman was able to learn enough to build an actionscript game engine for the class. After several beta versions, Norman and I worked out a template that the class could use to build a 2D scroller. The class built the levels, animated their character and modified the code for their level's "doors" and "deaths" as well as implementing the sounds they wanted. There are still a few glitches to work out...response to the "double jump" isn't perfect and if the level designer didn't line up their platform blocks perfectly, there are other glitch-moves that occur. Perhaps we'll massage the engine code for next year. If you are a teacher or someone who's interested in the template we used, let me know and I'll send you the .fla file. Note that all this is for educational purposes ONLY and that the graphics and code used are likely copyright in the non-school setting, so don't go trying to make something for profit.
